MPG role adjustment · 2025–26

Official

Reward impact that can stay on the floor.

Impact Rate now gives full credit at 30+ MPG and gradually reduces the above-replacement portion for shorter roles. The ranking page still lets you turn this adjustment off.

Role, not sample size.

The adjustment does not punish Tatum's 16-game sample because he played 32.6 MPG. It does reduce rate scores for players whose impact came in short nightly roles. Season Value is unchanged.

See official rankings →
Jayson Tatum · 32.6 MPG#15 → #13

No score penalty. He rises only because short-role players move below him.

Paul Reed · 13.9 MPG#27 → #57

His strong per-minute rate remains visible in the no-adjustment view.

Robert Williams · 17.1 MPG#20 → #43

A 17.1 MPG role receives a smaller penalty than Reed's 13.9 MPG role.

Methodology

A bounded role adjustment.

MPG is used as evidence of scalable role, not as another cumulative-minutes calculation.

01

Start with impact

Keep the bounded box-prior plus multi-season lineup-context estimate.

02

Give starters full credit

Players at 30+ MPG keep 100% of their Impact Rate above the replacement score of 25.

03

Scale short roles

The factor declines smoothly to 80% at 12 MPG or less. It never adds a bonus.

04

Leave Season Value alone

Season Value already accounts for workload through possessions, so the MPG adjustment is not applied twice.

Validation: The 20% cap removed sub-20-MPG players from the active-season top 25 and improved the mean season RAPM rank correlation from 0.547 to 0.552 across the available 2021–26 comparison. RAPM is a secondary sanity check, not ground truth.
