Methodology

Cross-season value needs a fixed scale.

Season Impact Rate stays relative to one season. The All-Time model instead centers every season on its own league average, uses one replacement baseline, and adds the value created across possessions.

01

Reconstruct Raw BPM

Dan Myers' published BPM 2.0 coefficients estimate box-score impact before the final team-performance adjustment. That avoids baking team wins back into the player score.

02

Put seasons on one scale

Each season is centered on its minutes-weighted league average. A +8 historical impact therefore means eight estimated points per 100 possessions above that season's average.

03

Measure career value

Season Value = (historical impact − −2.0 replacement level) × estimated possessions / 100. Career Value is the sum of every measured NBA season.

04

Keep peak visible

Peak 3 averages a player's best three 1,000-minute seasons. Prime 5 finds the best five-year window with at least four played seasons and 6,000 minutes.

Historical boundary: exact inputs begin in 1973–74. Turnovers for 1973–74 through 1976–77 use Myers' published estimator. Earlier NBA seasons, ABA production, playoffs, lineup context, awards, and championships are not included. Careers already in progress in 1973–74 are incomplete here; a separately labeled Legacy Estimate is the next research step.
