Buddy Hield Defense: What the Numbers Say
The available evidence does not rate Hield as a strong defender. His primary value comes from shooting and spacing; the defensive indicators are generally below average, while lineup estimates remain too noisy for a definitive individual grade.
The box-score evidence is consistent
Hield’s Defensive Box Plus/Minus is below zero in every completed season from 2016–17 through 2024–25, ranging from −1.7 to −0.3. DBPM is not a possession-by-possession film grade, but the direction is persistent enough that the responsible starting point is below average, not neutral or strong.
His best overall seasons show the same split. In 2018–19, Hield posted +3.5 Offensive BPM, −1.4 Defensive BPM and +2.1 total BPM. In 2022–23, he combined .614 true shooting and +2.5 Offensive BPM with −0.6 Defensive BPM, producing +1.9 total BPM. The positive value came chiefly from elite-volume shooting.
Lineup data adds context, not certainty
Through the site’s current 2025–26 data snapshot, Hield’s multi-season defensive RAPM is −0.95 and the model applies a small −0.08 bounded lineup-context correction. Those estimates are provisional and noisy: lineup results reflect teammates, opponents, roles and sample size as well as the individual player.
That is why hussEyquation limits how far lineup context can move the box-score prior. The evidence can strengthen or soften a conclusion; it should not turn one unstable defensive estimate into a sweeping label.
Why Defensive Win Shares do not settle it
A player can accumulate positive Defensive Win Shares while still grading below league average individually. The statistic allocates team defensive success using minutes and box-score components; it is not a direct measure of whether that player improved the defense. Team scheme, lineup quality and availability all matter.
The fair verdict is therefore specific: below-average defensive evidence, not proof of zero defensive utility. Hield can still hold a role when his movement shooting bends a defense and the surrounding lineup covers difficult assignments.
